About OSH Department

Ensuring safety, health, and dignity at every Ugandan workplace.

The Occupational Safety and Health Department (OSHD) is in the Directorate of Labour, Employment and Occupational Safety and Health in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development.

The Department administers and enforces the Occupational Safety and Health Act, No. 9, 2006 and its Subsidiary Legislation, and houses the National Authority for implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in liaison with the OPCW Technical Secretariat.

OSHD collaborates with the Federation of Uganda Employers, NOTU, COFTU, NEMA, UNBS, ILO, and OPCW to promote safe workplaces nationally and internationally.

Workplace Registration

Register your workplace with the OSH Department before commencement of operations. Valid for 3 years under SI No. 87 of 2014.

Mandatory inspection of boilers, lifting gear, pressure vessels, hoists, and other statutory plant at prescribed intervals.

Architectural and building plans for workplaces must be submitted to OSHD before local government approval.
